Heart, Exploration and Wild Ideas

There is not a doubt in my mind that these girls will grow up to be kind hearted, fierce minded and they will own the bravest of spirits.  I know this because I have seen how their parents raise them, big hearts, continuous exploration of daily life  and never ending support for the wildest of ideas.

A Local Maker's Project

Local Maker's Project

Last Christmas I attended an event at Spruce Collective in Abbotsford.  There were a ton of people milling about checking out the shop and its array of treasures.  Tucked in quaint corners were Local Makers; selling their creations, cooking donuts, pouring beer, all marketing the products of their mastery.  I fell in love--in love with the vibe I was experiencing at that very moment--happy people, celebrating the Christmas season, sharing laughter, purchasing gifts, selling and purchasing crafted tangibles.  I decided then and there that I wanted to be a part of it.  Not just someone who came and experienced the celebration, I wanted to be a part of creating that energy.  I couldn’t get it out of my head and in the early days of the New Year the idea behind this project was born.  “This year I am going to photograph 12 - 18 local Makers whose work and craft inspires me.”

Talking to artists has always been an exciting thing for me.  I love listening to creatives talk about what evokes their passion and why.  I really enjoy knowing why they make art and what life decisions brought them to where they are today.

Being an Artist isn’t simply making something you are interested in.  It’s not a beginning and an end.  It’s about the journey and exploration of the craft.  The pride you feel from a finished product is really satisfying however, the devotion to the process of art is what fills you up and keeps you going.  The journey is the fire.

For me being an Artist is a struggle.  Putting my passion and skills to work and creating a worthy, tangible product is only the first step.  Honing in on my craft, making my process and production purposeful, this where I feel the big push forward. It’s a big push forward to something more.  I have already discovered this is a common thread between the Makers I have chosen and myself.  In my eyes these Makers are succeeding in this artistic process.  During the time I am with the Makers and after leaving them I feel both fulfillment and honor that they have shared their process of to Art with me.

Most of The Makers I have chosen for my project are not only artists who make but are artists who make a living off the production of their passion.  Getting to know the people behind the products has been incredible.  I have discovered many similarities amongst The Makers and I am eager to share them with you.  I hope you find their work as inspiring as I do and I also hope that you’ll look them up and check out their work for yourself, you won’t be disappointed.

Over the next several months I will be highlighting each of the Local Makers that I meet with.  Please check back and watch for what's coming.
